Match Reports

Friday 16th November 2007
Celtic u16s  6  vs  1  Seaton

Celtic dominated the game throughout and could have scored three or four more goals, easily. The goals they did score came from Lee Curnow (2), Jordan Smith (2) and one each from centre midfield partners Kyle Fleming and Richard Watson. Only disappointment was to concede one goal leaving final score 6-1 to Celtic.

Friday 9th October 2007
St Bees  1  vs  6  Celtic u16s

Celtic set off very sloppy and conceded from a corner after 15 minutes St Bees 1 Celtic 0. Not much to talk about rest of half as Celtic forgot how to play football in windy conditions. Gentle words of persuasion from messrs Edwards and Brown saw Celtic turn round, with 40 minutes to proove getting into league cup final wasn't a fluke. Celtic scored 4 goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half through a Lee Curnow header, Jordan Smith strike, Ben Murphy strike and a Lee Curnow chip into the top corner to leave St Bees 1 Celtic 4, all created with excellent approach play. The scoring didn't stop there though and 2 goals from substitutes Michael Poole and Isaac Moore left the final score St Bees 1 Celtic 6

Friday 26th October 2007 (League Cup Semi-Final)
Celtic u16s  3  vs  2  Yankees

Celtic set off brightly enough but were unfortunate to go behind after 10 minutes to a dubious Yankees penalty (even they didn't think it was a penalty!). Nice football saw Celtic equalise then go in front 2-1 at half-time through two Clarke Kerswell goals. As the second-half progressed, Celtic created plenty of chances but couldn't seem to put any away, and this spurred Yankees on. It was no surprise then when Yankees equalised with 10 minutes to go. The U16's then seemed to wake up and realised a place in the final was at stake. Sam Bateson's 60 yard bye-kick went through to Jordan Smith who outpaced the defence to score and make it 3-2 to Celtic with 2 minutes to go. The match was as good as over with no more chances created to leave the final score Celtic3 Yankees 2 (U16's into the league cup final). Well done lads - good performances all round (especially James Edwards at the back and Lee Curnow up front).

Friday 19th October 2007
Whitehaven Miners  1  vs  5  Celtic u16's

Celtic set off brightly and took the lead after 15 minutes through Jordan Smith. Celtic allowed Miners to get level when some sloppy defending saw the Miners centre-forward stride through and put the ball beyond the Celtic keeper(1-1). A Celtic corner 10 minutes later saw Josh Hamilton poke the ball over the line from the resulting scramble in the goalmouth to make it 2-1 to Celtic. Celtic started to play the ball around on the wings and some nice football saw Celtic's lead grow to 4-1 with two goals from Celtic's excellent striker Lee Curnow. The introduction of Isaac Moore onto the wing saw him quickly into the action missing a couple of easy chances then putting away the most difficult one to make it Celtic 5 Miners 1. No more goals left it Miners 1 Celtic 5 - good away result.

Friday 5th October 2007
Wigton  2  vs  4  Celtic u16's

Bhoys travelled to sunny Wigton with a strong squad and found the net through a Kyle Fleming strike within 5 minutes (1-0 to Celtic). Jordan Smith doubled the lead with a lobbed volley from just outside the box 15 minutes later(2-0 to Celtic). Celtic kept creating chances and soon after Richard Watson hit the bar, they were awarded a penalty for hand-ball in the box. Captain James Edwards was told by the coach David Edwards  "Go on son!" and he duly obliged (3-0 to Celtic). Into the second half and Wigton set off brightly pulling a goal back 5 minutes into the re-start (3-1 to Celtic). Further panic amongst the defence allowed Wigton back into the game 10 minutes later (3-2 to Celtic). Nerves where then settled when substitute Michael Poole slotted home after some nice build up play (4-2 to Celtic). Celtic created more chances (Clarke Kerswell hit the bar) but the score remained at 4-2 to Celtic at final whistle).

Whitehaven Miners Social  0  vs  1  Celtic u16s

There wasn’t a lot to talk about in the first half, not up to the usual standard but the second half saw Celtic starting to create chances. Celtic went ahead half way through the second half through the hard-working and improving Michael Poole. 1-0 Celtic.
Celtic had 5 or 6 more opportunities to double their lead but none of these chances were taken. Miners Social didn’t threaten the Celtic goal to leave the final score 1-0 to Celtic.
Next stop, the semi-finals – opponents and date to be confirmed.
Praise to James Edwards, Ben Murphy and the ‘tremendous’ Simon Byers.

Saturday 15th September 2007
Whitehaven Amateurs  2  vs  6  Celtic u16s

In extremely windy (and within 5 minutes of the start very wet) conditions, Celtic played some lovely football, keeping the ball on the floor and creating chances even though they were against the wind. Some great link up passing between Kyle Fleming, Marc Brown and Michael Poole saw several chances go begging within the first 10 minutes. As the game wore on Kyle Fleming who was excellent in midfield found his shooting boots and tucked the ball past the keeper from just inside the box to open the scoring (1-0 Celtic). Several chances were wasted before half-time with one shot just going wide (Michael Poole) or keeper tipping onto the post (Marc Brown). Into the second half with the wind and within 10 minutes Celtic had stretched their advantage to 3-0 with goals from Michael Poole and Lee Curnow (great strike 10 yards inside the Amateurs half). Kyle Fleming thought he had put the game beyond Amateurs with a nice bottom corner finish to make it Celtic 4 Amateurs 0 with 15 minutes to go. Cleator Moor Celtic then got lazy and allowed Amateurs back into game with two nicely taken breakaway goals to make it 4-2 Celtic. The hoops then got back to playing football and created an opening for Marc Brown whose dipping shot came back off the bar and couldn't be followed up (not your day so far son!) Two more goals late on won it for Celtic, Lee Curnow doubling his account for the day and Marc Brown finally getting on the scoresheet. Final score Amateurs 2 - Celtic 6.
Next game Miners Social away Friday 21st League Cup.

Saturday 8th September 2007
Netherall  3  vs  0  Celtic u16s

1st match of the season saw Celtic visit Netherhall. Some nice football from Aaron Rossi, Jordan Smith and Marc Brown saw first opportunity of day leave Marc Brown’s chip from the edge of the box just not get over the keeper’s outstretched arms. Jordan Smith then seized on a one-on-one effort with the keeper but his shot unfortunately drifted wide of the far post. Netherhall’s first break of the day saw them outnumber the Celtic defenders and find the net with ease. Celtic responded by continuing to play nice football and create chances without finding the back of the net. Netherhall’s second break saw them find the net again (2-0). In the second half Celtic had to use up their substitutes due to players wearing incorrect footwear for the terrain – harsh lessons + blisters! This didn’t stop Celtic creating more chances and had 2 headers from captain James Edwards just flash past the post. Second half substitute Kyle Fleming was having a very good influence on the game. Jordan Smith and Michael Poole could have had a hat-trick each with chances against the Netherhall keeper but he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Netherhall had a final chance to score in the last minute and they duly obliged! 3-0 to Netherhall final score. Quote from the opposition manager “ I can’t believe the score on the run of the game!”

Friday 29th September 2007
Celtic u16's  0  vs  5  Windscale

Not a lot to say, Windscale were the better team - probably best team in league. Windscale scored 3 goals in first half but Celtic didn't lie down and played some better football in second half without any reward. Windscale scored 2 second half goals to leave the final score Celtic 0 Windscales 5. Good performances from Sam Bateson and James Edwards.
