Whitehaven Miners 1 vs 9 Celtic u10B

Well, this has been coming for a while with the B's playing lots of good football but not taking the chances when they made them.  Not this weekend though... with Kyle Martin grabbing 5 goals, Ellis Curnow 2, Ewen Fraser 1 and Declan Cullum 1, the boys finally showed that they know where the opposition goal is.  With keeper Ewan McAllister in Florida (poor kid) it fell to Liam Mattinson to don the gloves but he was kept bored by the defence of Callum Fleming, Tobias McAteer and Ryan Brown.  Special mention this week for Daniel Burns whose passing and movement was excellent proving that the simple stuff is the most effective.  Ryan Brown pushed up later in the game and Lewis Hamilton replaced him with a good battling perfomance.  Callum went in towards the end to let Liam stretch his legs and Miners got their consolation when the ball broke lose in the area for a tap in.  Well done lads, lets take the positive attitude into our next few games and try to keep the goals flowing.  (MOM - Ellis Curnow - But well done to Ryan and Spanners who I thought were great).

Sunday 28th October 2007
Whitehaven AFC 4 vs 0 Celtic u10B

Looking to bounce back from our heaviest defeat of the season the bhoys went to Whitehaven with a point to prove.  In the first half we looked like doing it as we passed well and created 3 glorious chances that went begging.  Just before the break we got sloppy and didn't close down allowing Whitehaven to hit an unchallenged long shot high over Ewan to make it an undeserved 1-0 at the break.  We talked about the slack defending at half time and how we would get tighter in the second half but it all meant nothing as Whitehaven scored straight from the kick-off following poor marking tracking and cover.  In the second half we couldn't get back the rythm we had built in the first half and Whitehaven got 2 more poorly defended goals to leave the final score 4-0.  Definitely not a reflection of the game but stark notice that our poor finishing coupled with slack defending will lose us games that we are more than capable of winning easily.  It's really important that we keep our heads up as some of the football is really good.  However, we must recognise that we are making mistakes that can be avoided and if we want the points they are there for the taking.  Maryport Dolphins next week at home... Let's make sure we don't make any mistakes in this one. (MOM - Tobias McAteer)

Celtic u10B 0 vs 6 Celtic u10A

The inter club fixture between the A&B teams kicked off in bright sunshine
on Sunday. There was obviously a big chance of a 'banana skin' result as
these lads all know each others game inside out. But to their credit the 'A'
team lads adopted the right attitude from the kick off and looked upon it as
a 'key game', which had to be won.
This attitude was demonstrated early on by M.O.M Gregg Rooney, who tore into
every tackle, and fired the first goal in from distance after a determined
run. Then a key moment in the game with the 'B' team still dwelling on the
first score, up popped Brad Miller with a similar strike, two goals in two
minutes. This allowed the boys some breathing space and time to get the ball
down and play some controlled football. A few more chances fell, and one of
these seen an unfortunate own goal, making the half time score 0 v 3.
Some words of praise from the coach and a change of personnel, with the
message to keep up the pressure, sent the lads back onto the field. To their
credit they continued just as they'd left off, with some good probing runs
from Ben down the right. But the next goal fell to a well drilled Aiden Kegg
finish, from some good approach play thro' the middle. two more goals again
thro' Brad, and Gregg seen the last of the scoring, but there were some
golden chances stopped by Ewan McAllister, who was well helped by Tobias
McAteer (M.O.M) in thwarting what could have been an avalanche of goals.
The 'A' team defensive unit, coped well, and stifled the 'B' team attack
down to just a couple of shots throughout the game. So a comprehensive win
in the end, but I'm sure it will not be that easy when we meet in the return
before Christmas. (MOM - Tobias McAteer)

Seaton 2 vs 0 Celtic u10B

Saturday 15th September 2007
Cockermouth  1  vs  0  Celtic u10B

After Wednesdays poor showing against Windscale the boys heard a few home truths in training on Friday and were also worked hard on their closing down.  It told on Saturday morning as we visited a strong Cockermouth team in their home turf.  From the off both teams seemed up for the battle and chances were scarce.  The battle was mainly in the midfield and was good to watch.  We tried harder this time to play the passing game and managed to get the ball out wide when possible though the final ball into the box wasn't there.  Both sides had chances in the game and Cockermouth were first to seriously test the keepers.  A well struck shot from outside the area was flying into the top corner but for a fantastic full length save from Ewan Mc.  The pre-match and half time Jaffa Cakes must have told because as the second half wore on the celtic began to press mre and more, carving out a few chances (how come the ball always drops onto the left foot of a right footer and the right foot of a left footer?).  Ellis Curnow came close twice late on, the first time making the goalkeeper save with an outstretched leg and then soon after beating the keeper but hitting the post.  Unfortuantely, it only takes one mistake to lose these games and we made it.  With one defender pushed up to increase the pressure on the Cockermouth defence they managed to clear the ball to the half way line and our remaining two defenders failed to clear.  The Cockermouth striker ran on and managed to poke the ball under the out rushing Ewan Mc.  The ball trickled painfully over the line to win the game for Cockermouth.  With only 30 seconds left it was a big ask to come back, we pressed one last time but it wasn't to be and the full time whistle sounded.  Although we came away pointless we definitely deserved at least 1 and could have won with better finishing.  The main positive was that we fought for the ball this time, something I expect to see us do even harder next week against Windscale in the league. (MOM - Ellis Curnow)

Wednesday 12th September 2007 (League Cup First Round)
Celtic u10B  0  vs  1  Windscale

Not a lot to report from this scrappy match.  Both teams effectively cancelling each other out for the duration of the game.  Windscale were up for the fight and the Celtic couldn't get their passing game going.  Regardless, Ewan Mc had very little to do in the Celtic goal until the last minute when the ball fell 8 yards out to an unmarked Windscale player.  Even though he needed two touches to get it out of his feet, Celtic were slow to close down, and he drove the ball high into the Celtic net to seal a 1-0 victory and end our cup run before it began.  We need to be a lot tougher in future games as the points in the league are there for the taking if we want them.  (MOM - Callum Fleming)

Saturday 8th September 2007
Celtic u10B  2  vs  0  St Bees

First game of the season and the Bees got off to a winning start against an unknown St Bees team.  The Bees started slowly, trying to play the passing game that they have worked on during the summner.  In a patchy first half there were some signs of that passing play but chances were few and far between against a well organised St Bees defence.  It was St Bees that came closest to opening the scoring in the first half, initially from a goalmouth scramble following a corner then soon after from a long range effort that was flying in but for the acrobatic save from Ewan McAllister.  In the second half the bhoys got a better grip and took the game to St Bees.  They took the lead after a fine passing move down the right wing resulted in Ellis Curnow firing across the keeper with a shot that was destined for the goal, Kyle Martin poked the ball home in true strikers style to pinch the goal.  Soon after, Liam Mattinson came in form the right wing and hit a shot with the outside of his right foot that bent towards the net only to strike the post.  It wasn't long though before we made it 2 - 0 with a fantastic passing goal.  The ball was won in defence by Callum Fleming who played it in to Daniel "Spanners" Burns.  Spanners layed the ball inside to Kyle Martin on the half way line and he slotted an inch perfect pass between two defenders into the path of Ellis Curnow.  Ellis took one touch then hammered the ball into the bottom corner of the net to seal the victory.  We had a chance to make it three after a through ball from Ellis sent Declan Cullum free, the keeper rushed out to clear and the two collided, the ball going out for a goal kick.  Declan was very brave and if he had gotten there half a second sooner it would have been 3 - 0.  I was especially pleased this week with our defence who coped well under pressure, well done Callum, Tobias and Ryan.  Now we await Windscale in the cup on Wednesday night at Cleator.  (MOM - Ellis Curnow)

Saturday 6th October 2007
Celtic u10B  1  vs  1  Wigton Harriers

An early kick off at Cleator saw the Under 10 B's taking on Wigton in a close game that ended  in a 1-1 draw.  Ewan McAllister was pretty bored in goals as the defence of Tobias McAteer, Ryan Brown and Callum Fleming soaked up the Wigton pressure.  At the other end we vreated a few good chances with at least 4 shots flashing past the post or just over the bar.  Again, the final finish let us down and lady luck stabbed us in the back again.  Wigton repeatedly hoofed the long ball looking to beat our defence on the bounce and after many atempts they got their break. A mis-timed jump let their striker in and he made no mistke with a great finish into the top corner leaving Ewan with no chance.  It was hard to take again as we were bossing the second half and didn't deserve to concede.  But the bhoys drove on, built up by the shouts from Captain Tobias McAteer and they equlaised soon after with some clever footwork from Kyle Martin making space at the edge of a congested area then unleashing a thunder bolt into the roof of the Wigton net.  We carried on pressing and had one more chance which again flashed wide before the full time whistle went on an entertaining but frustrating game.  Special mention this week to Ewen Fraser who was awesome, skill pace and most of strength in his tackling and running.  Well deserverd Man of the Match although Tobias and Kyle weren't far behind.  (MOM - Ewen Fraser)

Sunday 30th September 2007
Maryport Juniors  1  vs  0  Celtic u10B

This was always going to be one of our hardest games this season and the bhoys travelled to Maryport knowing that their job was to close Maryport down and frustrate them.  And they did just that for 34 minutes until Maryport got first toe to a goalmouth scramble to take the lead 1-0.  Following the goal the boys pushed hard for an equaliser and it almost came in the last minute from a Kyle Martin strike.  The keeper tipped the ball onto the bar and it sat on top for a second before rolling down the back of the net.  A great battling performance and the lads did everything that was asked from them and more. (MOM - Ewan McAllister)

Wednesday 19th September 2007
Celtic u10B  0  vs  2  Windscale

Following the last scrappy encounter between these two teams more was demanded from the bhoys and this time, their hearts were right in it although a glance at the scoreline shows that, yet again, things didn't go our way.  In another tight fought game between two evenly matched teams it was lady luck that opened the scoring.  Windscales got the break of the ball in the area and their striker swung a leg trying to burst the net but his leg was too short and instead of leathering the ball his studs just managed to clip it, sending it goalward at a snails pace.  Unfortunately, Ewan Mc was already on his way down to make a trademark save and the ball trickled up his falling body, over his shoulder and painfully slowly over the line.  It was a tough blow to take as we were looking more likely to score.  We pushed harder to get the equaliser but it was Windscale who sealed the win in the closing minutes after we watched a high ball coming into the area and, instead of moving to it and clearing, let the Windscale winger get in a volley which was superbly saved by Ewan.  Again, the rebound fell kindly and Windscale calmly slotted the ball home to make the score 2-0.  Positives were the battling play and some great passing that was just lacking a finish.  If we take more shots we will score more goals, and one day the luck of the bounce may just be with us.  (MOM - Ewan McAllister)
